How should I care for prints

There are many Giclee prints to be found in the National Gallery in Ottawa,  in New York city at  the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Chelsea Galleries. They have brought prices of as much of $10,000 depending on the artist. Canvas prints deserve the same care as an oil painting and the as do fine art prints on art paper can be treated the same as a watercolour painting. If the giclee print has been coated you can wipe it with a slightly damp cloth if you think it has collected dust.

Some tips include:

  • Avoid hanging prints in direct sunlight unless you have UV protection film on your windows.
  • With medium and large sized pictures use two hooks for more secure hanging. Measure and divide the width of the picture in three portions, put hooks on the wall based on your measurements. It is not absolutely necessary to have them at exactly the same height as you can easily adjust the picture.
  • Store pictures in closets, not attics or garages where temperature extremes can harm them.
  • Avoid placing them over fireplaces, on exterior walls, near heating of cooling vents, near sources of food and extreme dampness such as bathrooms - 55% humidity is best.
  • Glass on your fine art prints is advised to protect them from dust and dampness. When moving framed works support the bottom and side in a vertical position.
  • When you hang the prints ensure you have a suitable hanging device for the width and weight of the picture and appropriate to the wall on which you are hanging them.
  • If hanging several pictures as a group it is helpful to make a diagram on a piece of paper first, placing them for size and effect before you start putting hooks on the wall.
  • Smaller pictures are best at eye level and larger ones a little higher level.
  • Avoid putting pictures so low they can damaged banging things into them.
  • Clean the frames regularly with no more than a damp cloth and never use sprays or liquids. If they need more serious cleaning take them to a conservator.
  • Do not use incandescent light bulbs, they are too warm.
  • You can light your prints from bottom, side or top to accent the artist's highlights but be vigilant that it does not warm your oil paintings as that will dry the paint and it can crack and chip.
